Filling refers to the practise of adding the letters of a Hebrew letter in its spelled out for to the gematria of that letter or of the word(s) including it.

Example

The letter alef (א) has a gematria of 1. Spelled out as אל"ף (alef) the total gematria of the letters א, ל and פ is 111.
